Bio-oil hydrogenation technology (HEFA) can use vegetable oil, waste oil and waste animal fat as raw materials, through the conversion of triglycerides in oil, saturated or unsaturated fatty acids, to produce good quality bio-aviation oil. When utilizing this data set for life cycle assessment, it is crucial to consider energy allocation principles. The environmental impacts must be allocated based on the energy content of the bio-aviation fuel and any other co-produced fuels. The allocation should be proportionate to the energy provided by each MJ of bio-aviation fuel produced. It is important to ensure that methodological consistency is maintained with the system boundaries, and that the selection of allocation method is justified and in line with the goals of the study.
