Description

Location: GLO - Global
This dataset represents the production of 1 kg of a typical 20-way ribbon cable to connect drives to the motherboard of a computer. It is based on a 20-pin ribbon cable. The total weight of 1 unit of ribbon cable (with connector) is 0.0242 kg and the length 0.24 m, whereof the plugs weigh 0.0167 kg and the 20-cores cable 0.0075 kg. These weights have been extrapolated to 1 kg of ribbon cable (factor 1/0.0242). Main data are based on weighting and calculations of a Swiss type computer cable at EMPA laboratories, supported by EPD information.
[The full documentation of this dataset was originally provided in the corresponding ecoinvent report from the Swiss Centre for Life Cycle Inventories, which is accessible for free to guests and users of ecoinvent version 2 (https://www.ecoinvent.org/login-databases.html). The dataset may subsequently have been subjected to central changes to the database, as described in the respective change report for each new release.]
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.

Technology

The manufacturing process is represented through plastic extrusion (for HDPE and PVC), tin-coating, contouring (brass), and wire drawing (copper). Cable manufacturing is a process that typically is composed of: Insulation of copper conductors or optical fibres with selected polymer(s); If specified, shielding of insulated copper conductors (based on cable design); If specified, twisting of insulated conductors into pairs or triplets or quads (based on cable design); If specified, shielding of insulated pairs, triplets, or quads (based on cable design); Cabling of insulated conductors and/or pairs, triplets, quads into groups (based on cable de-sign); If specified, shielding of group(s) of conductors/pairs/triplets (based on cable design); Cabling of together unshielded and shielded groups of conductors into the cable bundle; If specified, overall shielding of cable bundle (based on cable design); If specified, application of separation barriers around cable bundle and/or overall shield; Jacketing over cable bundle or shielded cable bundle with selected polymer; Perform outgoing QA testing (tests based on cable design).
