Description

The coke produced by this process is intended for use as a reducing agent and energy source in blast furnaces, primarily for the production of iron in the steelmaking industry. The high temperature carbonization of coking coal in the absence of oxygen produces coke, which has applications in metallurgical processes due to its ability to withstand high temperatures and its chemical properties. When utilizing this data set, ensure that the system boundary includes the transformation of coking coal into coke, as well as the upstream impacts associated with the extraction and processing of the coal. Care should be taken to avoid double counting the environmental impacts during the allocation in multi-output processes that produce coke and other by-products. Life cycle inventory analysts need to consider the technological applicability of the data concerning the coke quality characteristics, and associated emissions, to their specific scenario.
