Description

Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production via the coal-based reduction process, commonly referred to as Coal-DR, is used in steel manufacturing as an alternative to the traditional blast furnace method. The DRI obtained using this process can be utilized in electric arc furnaces for producing steel. A Single Furnace Direct Reduction Iron (SF-DRI) unit is specifically employed in a single operation within this manufacturing route. When utilizing the life cycle assessment (LCA) data for the Coal-DR process, users should take into account the specific context of the demonstration project in China from which the data is derived. For COG-DR (Coke Oven Gas - Direct Reduction) and H-DR (Hydrogen - Direct Reduction) routes which are not widely implemented in China, the LCA data should be considered as estimates based on Coal-DR data alongside additional information from simulations, laboratory tests, and process modeling. Attention should be paid to the methodological differences when applying the data from Coal-DR to COG-DR and H-DR processes.
