Description

Location: GLO - Global
The functional unit is kg of water evaporated. This module should be used when evaluating drying of maize grain in column dryer.
None
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.

Technology

Drying at farm, in column dryer, at low temperature (60°C) of grains like maize. Fan motor power is 9.7 kW, and mixing is performed with 3 motors of 3.9 kW each. Evaporation capacity is 5.38 t/h of dried maize grain.

Column dryer is a rather old technology, commonly used in 2000's. It is replaced by more efficient technologies like hot air silo dryer or air recirculation dryer (CRAAQ, 2010). After drying, grains are usually stored in a 350 tonnes capacity ventilated silo for about 10 days.
Dust and particulate emission to air are not considered.
