Description

Reference product: electricity, low voltage [kWh]
Location: PE - Peru
This dataset represents the transformation of electricity voltage from medium to low voltage in Peru. In the year 2014 the total transmission losses in all voltage levels were of 1590 MWh (COES, 2014 and MINEM, 2015). The share of these losses was allocated to the different voltage levels based on generic data from Switzerland in 2009 (39% at high voltage level, 13% at medium voltage level and 48% at low voltage level)( Itten R., Frischknecht R., Stucki M. 2014).
Definition of the voltage levels:
- High voltage level above 24 kV (large scale industry)
- Medium voltage level between 1 kV and 24 kV (medium to small scale industry, service sector
and public buildings)
- Low voltage level below 1 kV (Households)

[This dataset has been generated using the system model "Allocation, cut-off by classification". A system model describes how activity datasets are linked to form product systems. The allocation cut-off system model subdivides multi-product activities by allocation, based on a physical properties, economic, mass or other properties. By-products of waste treatment processes are cut-off, as are all by-products classified as recyclable. Markets in this model include all activities in proportion to their current production volume.
Version 3 of the ecoinvent database offers three system models to choose from. For more information, please visit: https://www.ecoinvent.org/database/system-models-in-ecoinvent-3/system-…)]

Technology

Transformers are essential components of the electricity grid. They connect the different voltage levels.
Big power plants feed the electricity at a very high voltage to the electricity grid. Transformers between 600 MVA and 80 MVA can be found in substations, where the high transmission voltage is transformed to the medium distribution voltage. In an additional step the medium voltage is transformed to low voltage using transformers below 2.5 MVA. The small transformers below 2.5 MVA are allocated to the low voltage level, whereas all the other transformers are allocated to the medium voltage level.
