The inventory represents the production of viscose fibre using sulfate pulp as the main constituent. This transformation of sulphate pulp to spinnable viscose is done using carbon disulfide. The dataset models all relevant inputs necessary for the production of the fibre. Among others are, water, electricity, heat and chemical substances. Infrastracture is also considered. The process includes the following steps, alkalization, sulfurization and maturity. Sulphate pulp reacts with carbon disulfide and sodium hydroxide to create a solution that can be spun into a fibre. The process also recovers parts of the initially used materials, namely producing sodium sulfate and sulfuric acid.
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.
