This dataset represents the production of heat from hard coal in Quebec. This is an adaptation for Quebec from the hard coal global dataset. Only time period, annual production volume and heating value have been modified. Uncertainties have been adjusted accordingly.
The stoker boiler is assumed to fire egg coal with quality between long-flame coal and fat coal. The heating value (28.9 MJ/kg) and the composition of the coal are average values available from the literature. The emission data are also taken from literature reporting measurements performed at the end of the 1980s in Germany. Size distribution of particles has been estimated on the basis of recent information from EPA. Emissions of trace elements were calculated using the ash content in the coal and average transfer coefficients for coal power plants with ash retention of 98 %, as first approximation. With the assumption that coal is stored in a dry storage, no leaching is considered. Possible emissions to water during operation of the boiler are not included for missing information.

Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.
