Description

Location: RER - Europe
This dataset represents debarking and import of one m3 of azobe wood from Central Africa to European port (Rotterdam, Antwerpen, Bremerhafen or Hamburg). The imported Azobe trees are produced by (close to) sustainable forest management in Central Africa.

No data on debarking of azobe wood is available; thus, average European data for debarking pine in the forest is used, taking into account the modern equipment of the logging company. Emissions from biomass burning are according to literature values.

As inventory data availability on tropical forestry processes and tropical wood is very limited, the inventory should be considered case-specific. Any specific environmental impact from land use change following timber harvesting needs to be considered on a case-specific basis.
[The full documentation of this dataset was originally provided in the corresponding ecoinvent report from the Swiss Centre for Life Cycle Inventories, which is accessible for free to guests and users of ecoinvent version 2 (https://www.ecoinvent.org/login-databases.html). The dataset may subsequently have been subjected to central changes to the database, as described in the respective change report for each new release.]
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.

Technology

The dataset reflects a high technological standard for debarking. The transportation processes are average for transportation to Europe; transport distance however can vary. The high technological standard and legal operations of this dataset cannot be assumed to be representative for azobe harvesting. Site-specific data for debarking is not available but takes place before shipping the logs to Europe, thus European data for debarking pine used. The resulting bark is left to rot.
