Location: CA-QC - Canada, Québec
This dataset represents the production of iron(III) chloride in the region of Québec. The functional unit represent 1 kg of iron(III) chloride (FeCl3). The final product is however sold in a 12% iron solution state, which corresponds to 34.85% (FeCl3) or 58.08% solid iron(III) chloride (if the hydrated iron(III) chloride form is assumed to be FeCl3.6H2O).
The data providing manufacturing company makes two grades of product solution, 12% iron and 14% iron. The energy and material inputs per kg of iron(III) chloride differ between the two grades sufficiently to consider them as different products and justify the creation of two distinct datasets.
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.
