Description

This dataset represents the ironmaking process in which hot metal is produced using a blast furnace. It is applied in the context of processing sinter, pellets, lump ore, and scrap to manufacture raw iron that is foundational for further applications in the steel industry. Typically, this hot metal is the basis for producing various forms of steel and iron products which are crucial components in construction, automotive, and machinery manufacturing, among other sectors. When using this dataset for Life Cycle Assessment, pay special attention to the boundaries of the system being modeled. Include all raw materials used in the process, as well as energy inputs and emissions. The methodological advice is to ensure any co-products or waste materials from the process are allocated properly according to the ISO 14044 standards. Assess the recycling potential of scrap materials included in the process and factor in the associated environmental benefits or loads. It is also critical to differentiate between the impacts of using different raw materials (sinter, pellets, lump ore, scrap) in the ironmaking process.
