Description

Location: CA-QC - Canada, Québec
This dataset represents the extraction of unprocessed limestone from a quarry in Quebec.

Diesel and explosive consumption, and emissions to air provided by three (3) important limestone extraction sites was used. CO, SO2 and NOx emissions reported by the company were excluded from the dataset, since related to diesel and explosive combustion (and included in the "diesel, burned in building machine" and "blasting" datasets). Similarly, particulates emissions related to diesel and explosive combustion were substracted from the air emissions reported by the company, to avoid double counting.

Land occupation, land transformation, land-use for recultivation were estimated from a weighted average of three Quebec limestone quarries extracting 990'000, 88'000 and 480'000 tons of limestone per year (780'000 tons average), and an estimated lifetime of the deposits of 140 years.

Water use, quarry infrastructure and office heating has been included, based on "limestone quarry operation, GLO 2002" ecoinvent dataset.
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.

Technology

Building machines operates with diesel. Extrapolation: In Quebec, 65% of the extraction is made using Ammonia explosive, and 35% using gelatin explosive. The tovex explosive was used as a proxy in this module. CO, SO2 and NOx emissions reported by the company were excluded from the dataset, since related to diesel and explosive combustion (and included in the "diesel, burned in building machine" and "blasting" datasets).
