This dataset represents a modern sugarcane mill processing of 4 million metric tonnes kg of sugarcane stalks per year for the production of ethanol (anhydrous and hydrated) and electricity. The plant operates 200 days per season.
The industrial process diverts all sugarcane juice to ethanol production process. Plant configuration includes reduction of overall energy consumption to maximize of electricity output. It considers high-pressure boilers (65 bar, 485°C), application of thermal integration strategies reducing 20% of low-pressure steam demand, electrical drives in the crushing mills and molecular sieves for anhydrous ethanol production.
Overall process efficiencies assumed were 96% for sugars extraction, 89.5% for ethanol fermentation. Each 1000 kg of cane stalks yields 51.4 L of hydrated ethanol (93% w/w), 36.6 L of anhydrous ethanol (99.6% w/w); and 113.0 kWh of surplus electricity.
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.
