The activity models the unsafe treatment of a large used domestic refrigeration machine by physical dismantling in an unsafe and uncontrolled manner. The process takes place in an informal recycling site in the capital of Ghana, Accra. Metal recovery (steel, copper and aluminium) is a source of income for the informal recyclers and hence is the major motive behind this process. This dataset models air emissions from a) venting the refrigerant present in the refrigeration machine as well as from b) breaking the polyurethane insulation that releases the blowing agent of the foaming. Any geographical and temporal distinctions and climate situation are irrelevant for this UPR-LCI.
The UPR-LCI averages three types of refrigerations machines based on the refrigerant they contain. Calculations regarding the average fridge are found on the table attached.
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.

Physical dismantling performed in uncontrolled manner without the use of protection equipment, oftentimes performed with simple tools, if any. No use of anti-pollution equipment either.
