Description

Location: GLO - Global
This dataset represents treatment of used refrigerant R-12 by venting.
The refrigerant R-12 was a widely used refrigerant (mainly in automobile) and as aerosol spray propellant. It can be treated by two different technologies; 1) venting, and 2) final disposal.
R-12 is included in the list of "venting prohibition" under (§82.154, subpart F) under section 608 of the Clean Air Act in USA.
Reference: US EPA, accessed at https://www.epa.gov/section608/stationary-refrigeration-prohibition-ven…, on 4/4/2018).
Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.

Technology

Venting refers to releasing of the R-12 refrigerant to air. R-12 production was banned with the Montreal Protocol with this decision being in effect globally since 2010. Due to that, it is assumed that there is no reclaiming of R-12 around the globe.
