This datasets represents the construction of a water distribution network in an average town, providing water to households and industries. The dataset is based on two sources. The first source is data from a CH company, which was also the basis for preceding versions of this dataset (v3.0 and below). The second source is the “Anytown Water Distribution Network” distribution network model (http://emps.exeter.ac.uk/engineering/research/cws/resources/benchmarks/…), which is meant to represent a typical, generic medium-sized town transporting 5334 m3/day over a 69.53 km network. The Anytown model was used to update the data for cast iron (pipes) and to add reinforced concrete associated with two 591 m3 tanks. Life time of infrastructure is estimated at 70 years. Operation and maintenance of network is not considered and should be considered in the tap water production market dataset.

Undefined unit processes (UPRs) are the unlinked, multi-product activity datasets that form the basis for all of the system models available in the ecoinvent database. This is the way the datasets are obtained and entered into the database by the data providers. These activity datasets are useful for investigating the environmental impacts of a specific activity (gate-to-gate), without regard to its upstream or downstream impacts.
